The Heart of Split in the Center of Memories
Santa Lucia's story began in 1776 with the opening of the city’s first cafe. Located in the heart of the historic square, it quickly became a meeting place for citizens, travelers, and intellectuals.
Over time, the cafe evolved into a hotel, continuing to welcome travelers while remaining an important meeting place for locals. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, it hosted artists, merchants, and intellectuals, becoming one of Split’s key social gathering spots.
In the early 20th century, the property operated as Hotel Central, one of Split’s most prestigious hotels. Its elegance and reputation were crowned in 1927, when it was awarded the gold medal for modern comfort at the grand exhibition in Liege, Belgium. This was a recognition not only for Central itself but for Split, where the Mediterranean, Western Europe, and the world have always met.
Today, the building lives on as Heritage Hotel Santa Lucia, whose facade has watched time pass - a quiet companion to everyday life. Behind those same windows, guests discover what Split offers at its most genuine – the warmth of home, the elegance of bygone time, and the simple joy of the present moment.
Today, Kavana & Restaurant Central continues a centuries-long tradition of hospitality on Pjaca. Combining authentic Dalmatian flavours with contemporary cuisine, it recreates the spirit of the original cafe – a welcoming place where locals and travelers gather, dine, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Split.
