Central, one of the few Split restaurants in the city center that has survived the transition, operates on Narodni trg (Pjaca), and in the past the first and most prominent café in Split, where Split’s cultural and political elite met for almost 250 years.

In the seventies of the 18th century, the café was opened by the immigrant Venetian caffetier Horace Turcati under the name Botega di Kafe. He kept it until 1781, when the owners of the area, the Rosalem brothers from Friuli, evicted him, and around 1807, the “Swiss Café” of the Italian immigrant Nikola Seleban came to life in the same place. The café then became a cultural, entertainment and political gathering place for the people of Split, which only declined in appearance and offer in the second half of the 20th century. Since Seleban, Central has been a continuous catering facility run by a number of prominent citizens of Split, a place where dances, exhibitions, concerts, plays, the first cinema screenings were held, and the rules of Hajduk were adopted.
